Rising Futures surveyed the impact of digital technology on our lives. It showcased works that touch on being human in today’s technological world by ten Western Australian-based artists. The artists examined their concepts and use traditional and digital processes in a troubled world, as underlying technology continually influences our lives. As coded technologies unceasingly affect us, whether we know it or not, this exhibition invited audiences to consider the tense or possibly hopeful impact technology has on us.
As guest curator, I was influenced by philosopher Vilém Flusser’s idea that ‘…the air in a room is a “medium’’ (it transmits the [communication] waves).1 The curatorial rationale was drawn from this concept, it involved the consideration of how one communication system is changed by another. So, imagine that the air in the Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery offers audiences a different environment of possibilities. Where exchanging thoughts provoked by the works is possible, opening the opportunity to question the digital technologies shaping our future. 1 Flusser, V. (2002). Villém Flusser Writings. Edited, and with an introduction by Andreas Ströhl. Translated by Erik Eisel. University Minnesota Press. Minneapolis / London |
